Research focus
The use and advancement of linguistic insight and modeling in:
- Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning - check my ICALL Research Group and systems such as FeedBook, TAGARELA, FLAIR, KANSAS, VIEW, WERTi
- learner corpora, Second Language Acquisition, Language Teaching, and Testing (MERLIN, Kobalt-DaF)
- automatic comparison of meaning in authentic task contexts (CoMiC, SFB 833/A4)
- use and correction of corpus annotation (DECCA project)
- HPSG, constraint-based grammar formalization and processing
The interface of computational linguistics and empirical educational science, as explored in connection with the LEAD graduate school in Learning, Educational Achievement, and Life Course Development funded by the German Excellence Initiative.
The interplay of syntax and information structure, aimed at developing an architecture capable of encoding the constraint interaction from syntax and formal pragmatics to obtain contextual explanations for currently stipulated syntactic constraints.
Teaching computational linguistics in a way that combines current technology and research insights with the fundamentals of the field. For example, check out the Wiley-Blackwell book "Language and Computers" co-authored with Chris Brew and Markus Dickinson, which is intended for a non-specialist audience.
