Abstract / short description:
This interdisciplinary project investigates the potential of digitisation to improve the interaction of learning in class and in homework/self-regulated learning, in collaboration with Prof. Torben Schmidt of the Leuphana University Lüneburg. It addresses central questions regarding the design of modern tutoring systems in the context of foreign language teaching using a mixed-method design: How can individual practice with interactive systems be effectively designed and used for internally differentiated lessons at school? How does individually supported learning progress affect school lessons? What effects does feedback have on learning progress and on the motivation of students? The project spells out these questions for English foreign language teaching, given that systematic practice of the language system is an essential prerequisite for fluent, task-related language use in second language acquisition. This requires different amounts of time and accompanying feedback due to the heterogeneity of the pupils. In real-life school, such individualized feedback can hardly be given by the teacher and, if at all, is given by parents when children are doing homework. The project takes up these problems of internal differentiation and educational equity and examines in an interdisciplinary and practical approach how a tutoring system can be equipped with didactically meaningful exercise sequences with regard to content and motivational feedback and how they can be integrated into the lessons.
