Abstract / short description:
The role of the antiviral host factor tetherin for the spread of SARS-CoV-2
Zoonotic viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 frequently have to adapt to their new human host in order to spread successfully in the population. One important hurdle that many viruses have to overcome is the antiviral factor tetherin. This project investigates how SARS-CoV-2 manages to evade restriction by tetherin. The results will not only help to better understand adaptations that contribute to the spread of coronaviruses, but will also improve our understanding of the animal origins of SARS-CoV-2 and identify potential therapeutic targets in the viral replication cycle.
