Title:
Universities in Society - Real-World Experiments of Transformative Learning and Research for a Culture of Sustainability: Explorative Analyses, Synthesis, Consortium Coordination
Duration:
01/10/2022 to 30/09/2025
Abstract / short description:
In the consortium, an integrative research and development perspective on a culture of sustainability (HRK
2018) at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is to be developed that addresses both the diversity of the
universities and at the same time follows common fundamental sustainability principles. An integrative
concept for a culture of sustainability (CoS) is an endeavor that both supports transformation paths and
effective sustainability strategies of the participating HEIs and targets the transfer of the results to other
HEIs. The focus is on the core tasks of teaching and research and, as a task, on the third mission (with a
focus on sustainability transfer) and their interactions with each other. The aim of this integrative approach
is to investigate and demonstrate ways in which a CoS can be promoted and established at HEIs among all
status groups in the sense of a Whole Institution Approach (WIA).
The sub-project of the University of Tübingen (UT) supports the joint objective of KuNaH in all work
packages to develop and test innovative transformation paths for sustainable higher education institutions
(HEIs) and to disseminate the experiences. It focuses on explorative analyses to describe a CoS (WP 2:
Lead), at least two real experiments of transformative learning and research processes at UT (WP 3), the
synthesis of the experiences and results of the network (WP 5: Co-Lead) as well as the coordination of the
overall network (WP 6). The University of Tübingen represents the type of a traditional comprehensive
university in a 'small bis city' shaped by the university - also with excellence status and with many years of
experience in the field of (Education for) Sustainable Development. It can provide valuable suggestions for
other similar universities with regard to possible transformation paths, but at the same time it can also
provide a basis for its own even more intensive orientation towards sustainability transformation.
