Abstract / short description:
In recent decades, the prevalence of myopia has increased dramatically in many countries around the world, and it is estimated that 49.8% of the world's population will be affected by myopia by 2050. Among current pharmacological therapies to control the progression of myopia, atropine is the most effective, but the exact underlying mechanism and site of action is still unknown. High-dose atropine is very effective in children, but it also produces high myopia progression after cessation of treatment as well as more severe side effects, which limits its clinical application. Therefore, it is important to investigate the mechanisms of action of atropine in myopia to avoid rebound effects and side effects. We want to find out which signaling pathway(s) might contribute to the myopia-inhibiting effect of atropine, focusing on the interaction between GABA B receptors and atropine
