Abstract / short description:
Presbyopia is the loss of the eye's ability to adapt to near vision with increasing age. Between 40 - 50 years, the distance required for sharp vision increases to 50 cm, from 70 years on, sharp near vision is no longer possible. Although presbyopia is not a disease but an age-related loss of function, its effects are considerable: in 2015 it was estimated that almost two billion people were affected. The loss of vision occurs because the natural lens stiffens with age.
In the funded project, wireless contact or intraocular lenses are to be developed with the aim of controlling the refractive power of an artificial lens quasi-naturally via electrodes attached to the ciliary muscle. In this way, people with age-related long-sightedness could be given back all the freedom they need in everyday life.
For the project, a new interdisciplinary junior research group headed by Dr. Torsten Straßer will be established at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology. For the development, the group will cooperate with the University Eye Hospital Tübingen, the Core Facility for Medical Bioanalytics and the STZ eyetrial at the Center of Ophthalmology Tübingen, the Institute of Microelectronics at the University of Ulm and the Institute of Microsystems Technology at Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences.
