Title:
Shining a light on (sub)cellular K+ concentrations and dynamics in cancer cells
Duration:
01/09/2020 to 31/08/2021
Abstract / short description:
Identifying and exploring the importance of the intracellular K+ homeostasis as a key player regulating cancer cell malignancy and vulnerability has the potency to revolutionize our understanding of cell biology, harboring the potency to unveil yet unknown
backgrounds of cancer development and progression. Based on the generated K+ profile from different breast cancer cells, we aim for the specific manipulation of (sub)cellular K+ signals and concentrations within these cells and their organelles using “specific” K+ channel modulators. These imaging-based approaches will be complemented by the (correlative) assessment of
multiple cancer cell behavior parameters. Consequently, novel anti-cancer strategies and therapies based on the specific modulation of oncogenic K+ signals may evolve from our findings.
