Abstract / short description:
The scientific objective of this RAC consortium is to use advanced X-ray methods in order to tackle current and future challenges in soft matter and life science. We will in particular study the dynamics of proteins in crowded environments, in condensates and during phase transitions on their relevant length and time scales. These are research themes where new X-ray sources such as MAX IV, ESRF/EBS or E-XFEL provide unique but largely unexplored opportunities with enormous scientific potential. The multi-scale
nature of the underlying structural and dynamic features will require considerable technical and scientific development and the use of complementary methods in order to make significant progress.
A team of experts in coherent scattering and protein dynamics will tackle this problem in a four-year project.
The team comprises research groups from Siegen, Tübingen, Lund and Stockholm and includes groups from the coherent scattering stations from MAX IV, PETRA III, ESRF and E-XFEL. The development of
methods, instruments and scientific measurements are organized in five work packages including an approach to tackle the problem of big and FAIR data in such experiments. The project is led by groups in Siegen and Lund. It makes ideal use of the superior coherent properties of the new X-ray sources - such as MAX IV and ESRF/EBS - and will push coherent X-ray techniques to a level which allows to for example observe dynamics in condensates on length scales of a single protein.
