Vollständiger Ausbau der BATS Option für IN16B
Duration:

Abstract / short description:
This ‘Verbundforschung’-proposal was initially worked out as a joint proposal between the universities Tübingen and Erlangen-Nürnberg. It consisted of the two workpackages (WP) ’Adaptive focusing guide’ and ‘Scientific commissioning’ (wissenschaftliche Inbetriebnahme) which were supposed to be submitted by the universities Erlangen-Nürnberg and Tübingen, respectively. During the submission process we have learnt in the last minute that an important fraction of WP1 (in particular certain hardware components and funding for a postdoc for 12 months), for which a “Aufstockungsantrag” had been submitted in August 2018, is now accepted. Therefore the current proposal consists only of WP2. Nevertheless, under time pressure, we still describe the complete project in this proposal, because the reasoning and arguments remain unchanged. Importantly, while the funding of the "Aufstockungsantrag" ensures the continuation of the next phase of the workflow of the hardware development, in order to unfold the full potential of BATS, WP2 of the present proposal is required. Only then we can lead over to proper use of the full specifications by the entire user community.
Substantial development work has been performed by Erlangen-Nürnberg during earlier funding periods. The experience collected will be exploited with the construction and installation of a variable focusing guide and the gained knowledge will be transferred to Tübingen during the course of the ‘technical commissioning’. The present proposal consists now in the technical and scientific commissioning and the benchmarking of BATS and in key experiments on kinetics of bio-systems, metallic glasses and on magnetism. These key experiments shall prove the performance of BATS and make the instrument with its full capabilities properly available and known to the user community, including in particular new types of applications of the instrument.
