Title:
Environment of Early Hominins outside Africa: The Guadix-Baza Basin
Duration:
15/05/2019 to 31/12/2020
Abstract / short description:
The Guadix-Baza Basin (Granada Province, Spain) is the richest area in Western Europe for the study of early hominin dispersal and evolution in this region, having yielded dozens of localities with palaeontological remains and archaeological artefacts. This project is aimed at deciphering the links between large mammal communities and environmental conditions in the sites associated to the earliest evidence for hominin occupation in Western Europe, using stable isotope tracking (13C, 18O) in fossil bones and teeth, an approach that has almost never been used in Eurasian Early Pleistocene.
