»Doing Memory« as a perspective for a pluralistic society
A multi-faceted examination of political, media-related, and artistic negotiations of racist violence in Rostock-Lichtenhagen

Criminal offenses based on right-wing extremism reached an all-time high in 2016. This development emphasizes that right-wing violence is a precarious challenge for Germany’s societal cohesion as an immigration country. The project »›Doing Memory‹ as a perspective for a pluralistic society« offers an unusual perspective on this development. It examines how practices of memory that both recognize as well as distort significant racist acts of violence in Germany after 1945 were and are still negotiated. Based on the practice of memory in media, the arts, and politics (such as films, documentaries, journalistic work, or monuments), this project aims at uncovering various facets of memory making. It sheds light on what led to the attacks on the ›Sonnenblumenhaus‹ in Rostock-Lichtenhagen in 1992 and what has happened since, by discussing how memory practices of the past 25 years have addressed both the acknowledgement of suffering among victims of right-wing violence as well as forms of its suppression, ignorance, and denial. Given the scope of raging right-wing violence, the project itself serves as a ›social framework of collective memory‹, in the words of Maurice Halbwachs, that contributes to the critical examination of democratic education in a pluralistic society.
