Abstract / short description:
During the last two decades, the renewal attention in the field of natural product drug discovery has led to the isolation of variety of low-molecular weight secondary metabolites from plants; many of them are under consideration for drug development. Pakistan is blessed with countless important flora; the only need is to investigate them for their bioactive metabolites. This synopsis emphasized on the isolation, structure elucidation and biological evaluation of known and new secondary metabolites from two medicinal plamts; Solanum surattense and Heliotropium dasycarpum. The two genera Solanum and Heliotropium are rich sources of the compounds exhibiting medicinal properties like anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, anti-tumor, anti-aging etc. In the present study the methanolic extracts of Solanum surattense and Heliotropium dasycarpum were prepared and evaluated for various antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and were found active. These extracts have been fractionated into hexane and ethyl acetate soluble parts. Further plan includes the screening of the sub-fractions in antioxidant, antimicrobial, and or in enzyme inhibitor assays. The active fractions would be chromatographed to get pure secondary metabolites present in these fractions. The purified compounds will be identified with the help of spectroscopic techniques and then be tested for various biological actions to provide future drug candidates.
