Abstract / short description:
Organic radicals are fascinating materials because of their unique properties, which make them suitable for a variety of possible applications. Their possibilities are astonishing. We consider radicals as "wonder materials" and, although there is a huge amount of work focused on their synthesis, there is no an extensive study of their thin film properties that is the first necessary step towards applications. Organic radicals are certainly suitable for groundbreaking applications from energy storage to quantum computing; all fields having strong social impact, with low costs, chemical flexibility, energy saving technologies and eco-friendly production playing the major roles. In the past, I have addressed the deposition of metal-free organic magnets on technologically relevant substrates. With the present proposal, I intend to investigate the thin film processes in this class of materials focusing on the inter-correlation of structure, electronic properties and growth, by using highly resolved soft X-ray techniques, spectroscopy and microscopy, including investigations at synchrotrons, and electron paramagnetic resonant spectroscopy. Additionally, I want to explore the impact of preparation methods on the local magnetic-exchange coupling in thin films of metal-free radicals.
