Title:
Retina Ganglion Cells Visual Characterization toolbox
Duration:
01/03/2017 to 30/11/2017
Abstract / short description:
To help improve the next generation of subretinal implants for humans, studies of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) responses to visual and electrical stimuli are of great importance. Information is transmitted from RGCs to the brain by patterns of action potentials. Furthermore, most RGCs are selectively responsive for only one of a number of specific input features. For example, some cell types show directional selectivity, only responding to movements of an object in a particular direction.
To improve visual coding strategies for the Tübingen subretinal implant chip, RGC coding diversity shall be quantified by the development of a visual characterization toolbox, building on previous work from Baden et al. This toolbox will be the enabling tool for testing RGC type-specific activation through the presentation of specially designed electrical stimulation patterns.
