Duration:
01/02/2013 to 31/01/2016
Abstract / short description:
The study Informal Intergenerational Learning for Media Competence 2 (IGEL-Media 2) investigates the relationship between intergenerational interactions and learning processes. Within this framework the focus lies on the examination of competence development regarding the use of modern information and communication technologies (ICT).

As it is a main aim of IGEL-Media 2 to extend the over 60 years aged’s perspective explored in IGEL-Media 1, this study focuses on the younger aged (20-40 years) and middle aged (40-60 years) cohorts.

For this purpose IGEL-Media 2 intends to describe the way of informal intergenerational learning processes between a middle aged and a younger aged cohort as well as the role of generation and age stereotypes in these processes. It is assumed that subjective attribution of competence based on age are important for the choice of interaction partners and the progress of intergenerational learning. Furthermore the study asks for the younger, apparently media savvy cohort’s perspective. Here it is the main interest to analyze the perception of the intergenerational exchange and the potential for a media competence development of the different generations. Therefore constellations and conditions are to be identified, which enable younger generations to take the role of a learning partner in the intergenerational exchange and not solely the role of a facilitator or lecturer.

Following secondary analyses of data collected within the framework of the studies IGEL-Media 1 and CiLL twenty persons aged 20 to 60 years will be interviewed. These qualitative interviews are evaluated following the qualitative content analyses. In addition group discussions with three groups representing three different age cohorts (younger, middle and older aged) will be undertaken. The data of the group discussion will be interpreted following the documentary method for analyzing the implicit knowledge of media practices of particular generations.
