ProjectPlinius für das Anthropozän

Basic data

Title:
Plinius für das Anthropozän
Duration:
01/10/2025 to 31/03/2027
Abstract / short description:
At the centre of the planned monograph is the 37-volume Naturalis Historia (‘Natural History’) by Pliny the Elder (ca. 24-79 AD), one of the most influential texts of pre-modern nature writing. It aims to position this long-neglected work in the current field of research into human-nature relationships. Beyond antiquity, it asks how the Plinian book of nature, opened to large audiences by the epochal step of printing, also shaped early modern concepts of natural history and nature writing.
