Abstract / short description:
Sehen ist eine herausragende Leistung biologischer Systeme: beispielsweise können wir Objekte selbst unter äußerst variablen Bedingungen verlässlich identifizieren. Diese Fähigkeit zur robusten visuellen Inferenz erfordert komplexe Berechnungen, die von den Nervenzellen unseres visuellen Systems durchgeführt werden. Um das Sehen verstehen zu können, benötigen wir daher ein grundlegendes Verständnis der Inferenzprinzipien, die diesen Berechnungen zugrunde liegen, so wie die Aerodynamik die Grundlage für unser Verständnis des Fliegens liefert. Unser Ziel ist es, in einer engen Kollaboration zwischen Neurowissenschaftlern und Forschern im Bereich des maschinellen Sehens, die Prinzipien und Algorithmen aufzudecken, die robustes Sehen ermöglichen. Insbesondere werden wir Eigenschaften untersuchen, bei denen die Abweichungen zwischen der Neurobiologie des Sehens und aktuellen künstlichen Sehsystemen besonders auffällig sind.
