ProjectBNI-2030 – Biological Nitrification Inhibition for future-oriented and environmental-friendly crop production 2030
Basic data
Acronym:
BNI-2030
Title:
Biological Nitrification Inhibition for future-oriented and environmental-friendly crop production 2030
Duration:
01/04/2024 to 31/03/2027
Abstract / short description:
BNI-2030 will determine the effects of different genotypes of ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) with nitrification-inhibiting properties, i.e. which are able to produce biological nitrification inhibitors, in their use as nurse crop in intercropping with maize. Thereby, specifically the rhizosphere processes, which are involved in the reduction of N2O emissions as well as nitrate leaching shall be identified. Effects which work via shifts in the microbiome shall be disentangled from those altering gene expression. Furthermore, 15N labeling shall be used to trace the fate of 15N derived from clover-grass pre-crop mixtures, i.e. to disentangle microbial immobilization from losses and use by the maize plant. Thus, the technical target of BNI-2030 is the identification of ribwort genotypes which are of practicle use in maize crop production and to develope strategies for the optimal exploitation of the BNI potential.
