Title:
Chromium isotope systematics in methane-seep carbonates as a proxy for past redox changes in biogeochemical processes
Duration:
01/02/2023 to 31/12/2023
Abstract / short description:
Chromium is incorporated in marine carbonates only as a trace element. However, it is not well understood whether the reduced Cr(III) or the oxidized Cr(VI) is incorporated preferentially. The aim of this project is therefore to improve our understanding of chromium incorporation in methane carbonates and to test whether chromium incorporation is possibly controlled by microbial processes. For this purpose we determine the chromium isotope signature of methane carbonates from different locations in the Gulf of Mexico and the Southern China Sea. Furthermore, the combination of chromium isotopes with major and trace elements, especially rare earth elements, allows us to better understand the redox conditions during the formation of methane carbonates.
