Abstract / short description:
This year-long project forms part of my study of the final book of the Roman agronomist Columella’s De Re Rustica (‘On Agriculture’), written at the earliest in 63 CE during the reign of the emperor Nero. Book 12 consists of instructions concerning a vilica (‘farm manageress’) enumerating her allotted, mostly indoor tasks which process the villa’s produce for sale or storage, preparing for lean times. The output I am planning is the first large-scale analytical commentary and translation to be reach a press in English on any part of De Re Rustica.
