Abstract / short description:
The professorship “Immuno-Epidemiology of Infectious diseases” is connected to the "Clinical Research Group" (CRG), established at CERMEL in Lambaréné, Gabon, ensuring targeted and efficient project implementation. This professorship at the University of Tübingen, based at Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL), was established in 2016 and has strengthened the link between the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) and CERMEL-Gabon. This connection has facilitated the successful implementation of all innovative projects developed at ITM in Gabon. Furthermore, this position has significantly contributed to human capacity building in both Gabon and Germany.
The DZIF professorship also contributes to lecturing at Gabonese universities, at the University of Tübingen, and at CERMEL, where the professor serves as co-director of the Global Health program funded by the DAAD. One key component of this program is the Master’s program in Biology and Control of
Infection, offered by the UKT and based at CERMEL in Gabon. In the upcoming funding period, the focus will be on maintaining and expanding current academic, mentorship, and scientific leadership activities. Efforts will also be directed toward promoting and supporting new research groups led by post-docs mentored by the professorship. Importantly, the professorship aims to prepare these researchers to obtain the CAMES (Conseil Africain et Malgache pour l’Enseignement Supérieur) degree.CAMES is a pan-African organization that promotes research excellence, and the professorship will mentor young researchers in their applications for various CAMES grades, supporting their appointment as Principal Investigators and junior group leaders. This preparation will ensure they are equipped to compete for professorships globally, although priority will be given to positions at CERMEL or other African institutions.
