Abstract / short description:
Seeing relies on the detection of perceptually meaningful patterns implicit in the luminance signals distributed across the entire image. Understanding the principles and algorithms that facilitate robust detection of these patterns plays a fundamental role in understanding biological vision – just as knowledge of aerodynamics is crucial for reasoning about biological flight. Progress in robust computer vision is currently skyrocketing as algorithms are tested on increasingly challenging benchmark problems that were not even attempted a few years ago. Here we seek to leverage this progress to synergistically advance our understanding of visual neuroscience and machine vision. Building on a close collaboration between computational researchers and neuroscientists, our goal is to uncover the principles of robust vision and to identify its neural basis in the mammalian brain.
