Abstract / short description:
The lack of selectivity is the most severe limitation of metal oxide gas sensors (MOX) and many of the attempts to enhance it by integrating chemically active filters were hindered by the lack of flexibility of the state of the art technology. Our ground breaking establishment of Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) as an in situ synthesis and deposition of multi- component porous layers in combination with operando characterization techniques makes it possible to devise a coherent application specific sensor design and synthesis methodology, which is the main goal of the project. To prove the validity of the approach, we will fabricate MOX based gas sensor prototypes able to meet the specifications of domestic CO detectors. Our arguments for success are: The gained knowledge about the specific sensing mechanisms and the influence of the different sensor parts on the overall sensor performance; Innovative experimental and modeling procedures based on a fast and flexible deposition technology for multiple layers; The established phenomenological & spectroscopic characterization methodology. The proposed research also allows for cross- disciplinary training of doctoral candidates at the interface of nanoparticle technology, nanoscale engineering, surface chemistry, and microsensor science and engineering.
